Iron Five Tournament Report

Over the two days of Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th our two teams of 5 players from Taunton Ultimate Frisbee Club competed in the Iron Five tournament. The tournament was an indoors event with no substitutions permitted. Our two teams were:

Tone Raiders 1: Ed Hopkinson (C), Dan Upsher, Owen Thomas, Rob Jones and Hannah Johnson.
Tone Raiders 2: Paul Wittle (C), Jon Francombe, Dale Cooper, James Richmond and Anthony Howman-Farmer.

All Ultimate Frisbee tournaments have a pool stage which allows the organisers to decide which ‘league’ the teams are really in, after this there is a knock out which leads to a trophy. The Iron Five tournament is out of 32 teams and effectively had three ‘leagues’, the cup, the plate and the vase. This means final rankings may be misleading as a team achieving 17th is in fact the winner of their ‘league’ (the plate). I believe the vase ‘league’ winning position was 22nd.

The first team found themselves in a tough pool and after the first days play managed only one win, however this was a convincing 8 nil victory. This placed the team 6th out of a pool of 7 and placed them in a cross-over game into the plate league. On the Sunday they picked up their game playing as a team despite have little opportunity practice together prior the tournament. They were able to win their next game putting them into the plate league. They then proceeded to win the quarter final in a hard fought game. Unfortunately they then lost the semi-final by a similar margin of just one point leaving them in a play off for 19th place. They finished the tournament on a win to achieve 19th place and by far the best position our club has achieved so far!

The second team was made up of a mixture of experienced players and those in their first tournament. Again finding themselves in a tough pool they thought hard picking up points against teams including the eventual overall tournament winners, however they came bottom of the group of 8 teams. This left them only able to achieve a maximum position of 28th out of 32. They then proceeded to improve their play and were able to win their final two games and came out with a respectable 28th position showing notable spirit even in the face of some heavy defeats.

These results were an excellent achievement and are the final competitive results the club will be involved with this year. Squad photograph showing both teams together to follow in the next couple of days.
